Chennai is one of the business hub town in India as it attracts thousands of crowd from all over India in search of jobs and pursuing their carriers and fulfilment of their dreams .Chennai is not only a business hub , even contributes to a big market city for beggars also especially who throng in MRTS.
After my college hours, I regularly take train from Chepauk to Velachery which witnesses a large crowd of beggars at their practice. An elderly woman, regularly with loose hair and dirty cloth in train begs to passengers to show mercy at her and it attracted my attention to think over the matter more seriously. This made me to follow the beggar and count how much money she earn after every stop. To my surprise she carried out her skill in each at every compartment in the regular intervals of stops at last earning an ample amount of 126 rs in just 30 minutes duration of journey, which was quite shocking .A beggar earning 126 rs in 30 min is not a simple thing . I found myself calculating her total earning she acquires a day gave me real shock of totalling over thousand rupees which even an IT professional of today can never think dream of. If from a single train a beggar can earn such a big amount of 100 rs , she take at least ten train per day which amounts to 1000rs per day and 30000 rs per month 3 lack 60 thousand per annum. According to Indian constitution a woman who earns more than 1,80, 000 per year she is subjected to pay 1000 rs as a income tax to the government but the beggar has no income tax, no property tax and even does not carry a ticket for travelling in a train.
This sprawling business doesn’t stop with this woman, it involves a large network from small kids to elderly questioning the future of many especially the children involved in such acts. One such incident I happened to witness was while travelling from college to home when a group of kids begging for money and later consumption of pan masala by these small generation where the distributor to whole group was none other than a small boy of age between two to three, added to my surprise. Its indeed a big question where all this are heading to and what will Indias future if its future generation gets caught in the anti-social web.
